INTRODUCTION TO COAXIAL SHIELDED HIGH VOLTAGE CABLE
Unipolar coaxial shielded high voltage cable made from polyethylene (PE) based insulation materials and its polymer derivatives.
MAIN BENEFITS provided by these materials: high dielectric strength and resistivity, low dielectric loss factor, good resistance to thermal, mechanical, climatic, chemical or even radiative stresses.
ELEMENTS OF THE COAXIAL SHIELDED HIGH VOLTAGE CABLE
Coaxial shielded high-voltage cable consisting of a copper or copper-tin alloy conductor (Cu / Sn) surrounded by an insulating envelope made of one of the dielectric materials mentioned above (PE, XLPE, LDHMW PE, EPR , EPDM, Silicone), of a metallic screen in the form of a braid playing the role of reference (0 V – GND if connected to earth). The braid also serves as mechanical protection by stiffening the cable. It is covered with an outer sheath of synthetic material such as PVC, TPR or TPE-U. The coaxial shielded high-voltage cable is therefore comparable to a cylindrical capacitor, the electric field is confined between the 2 formed electrodes (hot spot core and ground braid).
In order to ensure a radial distribution of this electric field, a black carbon composite, semiconductor, is interposed on the conductor (semiconductor screen on core) on the one hand, and on the external part of the dielectric insulator (semiconductor screen on insulator) on the other hand. BENEFITS of these screens: avoid local distortions of the electric field and thus increase the lifetime of high voltage cables. The other advantage of semiconductor screens is that they reduce partial discharges and internal corona effects.
