VME430 crate

The crate VME430 was introduced by CERN. It offers another extension of the VME64, geared towards data acquisition, beamline control and test instrumentation for nuclear physics and high energy physics. It offers a particular crate design: a robust mechanical bin, a modified VME430 backplane, a power supply and a fan tray. These last two elements are removable and contribute to the modularity and flexibility of the structure. They reduce on-site maintenance times, and they continuously facilitate the exchange of faulty parts.

Thanks to the three rows of connectors P1 / J1 and P2 / J2 the VME430 backplane is compatible with VME / VME64 modules. There are 3-line DIN-30 Paux / Jaux connectors added between P1 / J1 and P2 / J2. They support addressing and additional grounding, clocks and power supplies for – 5.2 V and – 2 V ECL fast circuits, and also +/- 15 V (optional) for analog electronics. The electronic modules implemented for analog read-out applications have a high sensitivity, and in order to meet this strong constraint, the switching power supplies of our VME430 W-IE-NE-R models generate extremely low noise levels.

Thus W-IE-NE-R meets this double requirement, on the one hand a robust and modular crate VME430 and on the other hand a very stable power supply that guarantees that your acquisition modules operate in optimal conditions.

W-IE-NE-R offers  a complete crate of 21 slots that is suitable for 6U and 9U cards as in their 64 and 64x versions.

The VME430 chassis with 21 slots of the 6021 and 6023 series are the most popular models from the manufacturer W-IE-NE-R. The modularity concept based on the assembly of the bin, the fan tray and the power supply, gives it a unique flexibility.

The mechanical bin allows the insertion of 6U cards at the front, and, via the rear transition cage, additional “ user defined ” cards in 3U (bin UEV 6021) or 6U (bin UEV 6023) for a depth of 80/120/160 and 220 mm.

The fan tray allows uniform ventilation with a standard block of 3 fans for the front or a block of 6 fans covering the entire depth of the frame. The fan tray is always equipped with RS232, Ethernet and CANbus interfaces which allows the control of powers, voltages, currents, and temperatures.

The well-known architecture of the 6000 series power supply, built with a PFC, a DC bus and DC / DC blocks, can meet a large number of voltage and current configurations, with a choice of power ranges from 1500 W to 2900 W.

Numerous options complete this flexibility: a 1U ” plenum ” air compression chamber, temperature sensors at different points of the crate, a dust filter, insertion / extraction levers for the power supply.

The 21-slot crate VME430 for 9U cards of the 6021 and 6023 series are based on the same topology. This time the backplane is extended to J1 / J2 and J3 and a so-called ” VARIO ” version can accommodate both 6U / 160 mm and 9U / 400 mm cards. The fan tray allows uniform ventilation with a block of 6 fans / 400 mm standard, 4 fans / 400 mm “ super blower ” for the front cards, or a block of 9 fans / 600 mm standard then covering the depth of the crate. Modular power supplies can generate powers from 1900 W to 3600 W.
