SHR high voltage power supply

SHR HIGH VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY

The new SHR high voltage power supply series is a very high precision source masuring unit (SMU) dedicated to R & D services in companies and laboratories. It is equipped with the finest high voltage generation technology on the market. The SHR high voltage power supply provides up to 4 high voltage channels, each with independent control of voltage, current and polarity, which is reversible by electronics. A large, high-quality 4.3-inch TFT screen displays detailed electrical information. The instructions are entered by using a rotary digital encoder.

The SHR high voltage power supply is suitable for applications using photomultiplier tubes (PM), micro-channel plates (MCP), silicon PM (SiPM) or multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) detectors, APD detectors, gas detectors (micromegas), wire chambers, germanium detectors, etc.

SHR HIGH VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY – Standard version

The high-voltage power supply SHR follows the SHQ power supply which was stopped beginning of 2018. It continues the principle of it, being a high-resolution and high-precision power supply, while integrating the latest hardware and software developments of Iseg:

Electronic polarities and ranges of voltages and currents

  • Switchable polarity with electronic reversibility. This function is exclusive to ISEG. It benefits from a technology transfer from DPR converters and NIM or NHR modules. A high voltage switch is internally controlled by a signal from a multifunctionalThe latter receives the polarity order, positive (+) or negative (-), from the navigation menu on the front panel or from the remote interface (USB / Ethernet).
  • 3 distinct and switchable voltage / current ranges. The step-up stage is composed of a ‘primary – secondary’ transformer with multi-windings and a high voltage filter sized in voltage, current and power. This high voltage generation mode allows to withstand voltages up to 6 kV and to output currents of 4 mA for powers of 10 – 12 W. These 3 ranges are: 2 kV / 4 mA, 4 kV / 3 mA and 6 kV / 2 mA.

These 2 new features have the following undeniable advantages:

  • No need to open the power supply cover to reverse the polarity, and no need to unscrew half a dozen screws, to access the motherboard to reverse the high voltage block and switch from positive polarity to negative polarity. This involves many risks: pulling out the connectors, de-wiring and re-wiring, fatal loss of high voltage electrical connections, risk of dielectric breakdown!
  • The multi-range generation mode allows the high voltage module to be used in applications as ‘opposed’ as the Silicon (500 V see 50 V) and Germanium (from 3.5 kV to 5.5 kV) detectors.

Detailed settings and measurements, linearity scales

The SHR high voltage power supply incorporates all the known characteristics of the SHQ model:

  • voltage measurement accuracy +/- (0.01% Vout + 0.02% Vnominal)
  • current measurement accuracy +/- (0.01% Iout + 0.02% Inominal)

The 20-bit DAC and 24-bit ADC converters allow, with its on-board processor, very fine adjustments.

The linearity of the operation is guaranteed in the range 1% .Vnominal up to 100% .Vnominal.

A new display and a new navigation

A 4.3 ” wide TFT touch screen with high quality multi color displays all detailed information such as setpoints and voltage / current measurements, gives access to change the polarities and the 3 high voltage generation modes. Other useful functionalities have been added, such as a time reader  of voltages and currents, data logging & scripting. The menu navigationis run by a very precise digital wheel encoder.

Numerous flags are positioned in supervision status that allow you to check the current voltage supply operation. isVLIM and isCLIM for when Vmax or Imax is exceeded, isEINH, when an external inhibit is activated, isRAMP when the voltage increases or decreases, isTRP when the trip current is reached, isEMCY when an emergency stop – emergency – has been requested by l operator, isEIER, when a communication error – time out – has been observed, etc. All these events are recorded in the software in real time, so that the user understands its origin and its meaning.

DESCRIPTION OF HIGH VOLTAGE SHR ‘HIGH PRECISION’

In addition to the characteristics offered by the SHR ‘STANDARD’ high voltage power supply, the SHR ‘HIGH PRECISION’ high voltage power supply provides two feet of current measurements which are selected electronically and automatically by the processor:

  • The first current measurement loop – high range – is linked to the maximum current of the selected mode, for example in the case of 2 mA mode, the resolution is 2 nA.
  • The second loop – low range – has a standard threshold of 20 µA below which the processor automatically adapts the resolution. This time, for any current in the range 0 < Iout < 20 µA, the resolution is 50 pA.

Note that this high resolution search only makes sense if it is accompanied by a very high precision measurement. If we look at the measurement error given by the formula +/- (0.01% Iout + 4 nA), we can see that, for a real current to be measured of 5 nA, the error will be 4 nA giving a relative measurement in the range [1 nA; 9 nA]. In such a case, it is interesting to have a resolution of 50 pA to refine the precision around the real value sought (DELTA I).

The SHR high voltage power supply is particularly suitable for physics applications where extremely fine current measurements are required: Germanium (Ge) and Silicon detectors, gaseous detectors such as Micromegas, Avalanche Photodiodes (APD) with temperature compensation, etc.
